What is Deep Democracy?
Deep Democracy is an advanced facilitation toolkit for leaders, managers, consultants, teachers and facilitators – anyone who wants to work more effectively with teams where conflict and tensions slow progress. At its core, it is a cutting edge facilitation and conflict resolution methodology that is pragmatic and easily acquired. It provides a new way of seeing situations and the necessary skills to improve decision making, enhance productivity and performance and achieve breakthroughs in seemingly impossible-to-solve issues.
Where has Deep Democracy been used?
Since Deep Democracy’s inception in South Africa, it has spread to the UK, America, Canada, Russia, India, Ireland, Denmark, Zimbabwe and Israel. It has been used as a method for conflict resolution and mediation, organizational change and development, community development, leadership training and facilitation of group processes. It stands testament to the power of inclusion and diversity in real and sustained change.

Options for Success applies Deep Democracy principles and tools in the context of human resources. We utilize this toolkit when working clients who are encountering cultural, gender or generational barriers to economic opportunities.
Training
In May 2008, Options for Success Inc. and iNSPiRED PRACTiCE co-hosted White & Yellow Belt training for 11 members of the Winnipeg community. We will continue our commitment to self development and capacity building in Winnipeg by co-hosting more training in the future.
Participants learn the basic framework and tools of Deep Democracy – which can be used right away. The course offers a practical framework through which individuals, teams and groups can make infinitely more productive decisions. Participants learn to uncover and address the “elephants” or blockages that cause difficulty and frustration.
The basic assumption of Deep Democracy is that there is enormous wisdom and value in conflicting opinions. From this starting point, true and deep buy-in can be built. This approach creates consensus which recognizes and includes the wisdom inherent in minority views, rather than ignoring it or overriding it.
Learning Outcomes
In this training you will gain skills and tools that will enable you to:
- Run a different kind of “check in” process that will uncover group dynamics;
- Facilitate decisions that secure real buy-in and commitment;
- Deliver a “climate report” to raise group awareness and facilitate decisions
- Amplify what is happening, helping people to say what needs to be said and uncover the real issues;
- Help individuals find their own solutions to complex emotionally charged issues through reflective listening;
- Recognize when a group is avoiding the underlying issues that are blocking them from achieving what they want.
